What's Your Problem ?

I'm renting an old house at the moment and it gets quite cold and draughty. The central heating system doesn't work properly. My neighbour told me her daughter had something called a Home Front Grant. Can you tell me anything about the grants?
WARM FRONT is a home energy efficiency scheme that provides grants which help to cover the costs of home insulation and of improving energy efficiency. The grants are available to owner-occupiers and to people renting accommodation who meet certain conditions.

There's also an enhanced scheme called Warm Front Plus which is available to people aged 60 or over in receipt of means-tested benefits. (There are different criteria for people in Wales).

The Warm Front grant covers work including insulation measures such as draught proofing of windows and doors, and space and water heating improvements such as electric storage and immersion water heaters. Warm Front Plus grants are available for not only these measures but also additional work such as repairs to existing central heating systems that are incapable of producing heat and in certain areas where crime is high, security improvements including door and window locks. The work is generally carried out by a scheme manager.

Alternatively, you can apply for a grant to pay for all or part of the cost of work which won't be carried out by a scheme manager, for example, work which you want to carry out yourself. This is called a 'materials- only' grant. If you're eligible to apply for a Warm Front or Warm Front Plus grant you're also entitled to apply for a materials only grant.

In England, the maximum grant for Warm Front is £1,500 (or £700 in certain circumstances) and for Warm Front Plus £2,500. A materials-only grant can be awarded up to a maximum of £250.

To be eligible for a grant you must satisfy certain residence and benefit requirements. Further details can be obtained from your local CAB and / or by calling the scheme on freephone 0800 316 2814.
