| What's Your Problem

| I joined a local gym and paid 2 months money in advance but I never went. I had a letter saying my membership had been blocked but I ignored it. I didn't want to go anymore. Now, after 6 months I've had a letter saying I owe the gym 4 months money and unless I pay them they'll sue me. What can I do? |

A You must look at the contract you signed when you
joined and paid your 2 months money. The contract should tell you for how
long you agreed to be a member of the gym and how you'll pay for membership.
You can't ignore the contract and decide not to be a member just because you
don't want to go anymore. Your contract may say that you agreed to join for
6 months. If so the gym is trying to recover the money owed to them.
Look at your contract, see what you agreed to and talk
to the gym as soon as possible. The problem won't go away so don't ignore
it. If you have the money to pay, then it's your responsibility to do so.
Not paying will mean the gym will pursue you for the debt which will
eventually cost you more money. If you can't pay the full amount or have
problems, try and agree a weekly or monthly amount that you can pay until
the debt is paid in full. |
