What's Your Problem ?

I've got 2 children under school age and I'm working full time. I'd like to work part time but I'm not sure my boss will let me. Is there anything I can do?
There may be. From 6 April 2003 parents with children under 6 or disabled children under 18 have the right to ask to work flexibly. Employers must consider the request seriously.

If you've been with your current employer at least 6 months, you can ask to change the hours you work, the times you work or ask to work from home. You'll have to ask in writing and be clear about why you are requesting the changes. Any changes will be permanent unless you and your boss agree otherwise. Think carefully about what hours/times will help you care for your children, the effect on your wages and on your employer's business.

Your boss should have a meeting with you within 28 days of receiving your request. You can discuss your request and any other options your boss suggests. You can take a workmate or union rep to the meeting. Your boss then has 14 days to write to you agreeing the changes and start date, or giving you clear business reasons why he cannot agree to the changes.

If your request is turned down you have 14 days to appeal. The letter from your boss should tell you how to appeal. In some cases you may be able to go to an employment tribunal or claim sex discrimination.
