| What's Your Problem
? |
| I work in a shop and my boss has told the staff that he wants us to work on Good Friday and Easter Monday. I thought these days were bank holidays and according to the law I was entitled to the day off. Am I wrong? |
|
Unfortunately there is no general statutory right for a
worker to take bank or public holidays, with or without pay. Any rights that
you have to take the day off will be contained within your contract of
employment. Your Citizens Advice Bureau could have a look at your contract
for you.
If you really do not want to work, before saying no outright, you should think carefully about how secure your job is. Will your boss sack you and easily find someone else to work the bank holidays? How much do you want to keep your job? If you are dismissed have you worked there long enough to consider claiming unfair dismissal? You may want to try negotiating with your employer. If he/she insists that you work will they give you additional pay and / or time off? If a group of you feel the same way, it might be easier to negotiate as a group. If you belong to a trade union, you could ask your union to represent you. You can approach your Citizens Advice Bureau for more detailed advice. |
